Topics To Know
By Michael Ritacco, Oraclenotes.com

The upgrade exam seemed to be far less forgiving, and could be considered more difficult than the standard track exams. This is most likely because of the depth of knowledge expected and covered within 54 questions.

I found that the questions on this exam have no middle ground. You know exactly what they are asking or you don't. DO NOT expect those often blatantly wrong answers in the multiple choice line up to be there to help you!

As with most Oracle certification exams, a good command of the new init.ora parameters, views, and syntax should be expected and this one is no exception. However, the key to passing this exam is to focus your study on the features Oracle feels are the most important improvements (not always the most used) to the database since release 8.0.

The majority of the exam questions come from the following five topics, so I highly suggest you focus your study efforts here.

  • Optimizer and Query Improvements
  • Availability and Recoverability Enhancements
  • Partitioning Improvements
  • Summary Management
  • Tablespace Management

Although the remaining sections Indexes, IOTs, LOBs, Net8, Tools, Security, Database Resource Manager account for fewer questions on the exam, combined they could be the deciding factor between passing and sitting for the exam a second time.

Strong knowledge in the above areas should enable you to do very well on this exam. The questions can be difficult, but nothing a good DBA can't handle. Just keep in mind your getting Oracle8i certified with only one exam, it could always be worse.

Good Luck!
