The Oracle8: DBA exam is one of the more difficult exams in the OCP program.
While the Intro exam featured very cut and dry questions and answers, this exam
is less clear. Exercise great caution while sitting for this exam. The questions
can be very vague and often times present two or more plausible choices.
Read
the questions carefully as one word can make all the
difference. Be wary of the questions that ask you to
pick the "best choice", because it is probably
an indicator that there are at least two "technically" correct
answers, but only one choice that best fits the given
scenario.
This
exam will hit you hard in the area of physical and
logical structures. Your knowledge of physical structures
such as redo logs and datafiles will probably be tested
thoroughly. While the controlfile and init.ora will
draw at the very least two or three questions apiece.
Expect the bulk of the questions about logical structures
to be about tablespaces, tables, and indexes. It is
important to know the storage clauses, ALTER statements,
and general behavior of each one of these objects.
Know
the difference between a bitmap and a b-tree index
and the basic performance characteristics of each type.
It is likely that you will get three or even four questions
(as I did) on indexes. Count on anywhere from five
to seven questions about storage parameters like PCTFREE,
INITRANS, NEXT, and MINEXTENTS. Most of these will
be fairly straightforward if you understand them relatively
well.
Constraints
are not nearly as prominently featured in this exam
as they were in the Intro exam, but you should know
how they work and how they are maintained. In addition,
expect a question or two on the purpose of triggers.
User,
role, profile, and privilege management will be fairly
well represented on this exam. Make sure you know the
difference between system and object privileges and
how they are typically granted and revoked. Expect
a question or two on resource limits and password management.
The exam's question or two for Role management will
probably focus on assigning them to users and other
roles. Know the dictionary tables that relate to users,
roles, privileges, and profiles, it is likely to have
anywhere from two to four questions on these tables.
The
remaining portion of this exam will test you on Import/Export,
SQL*Loader, Auditing, OEM Tools, and National Language
Support. Each one will more than likely be represented
by no more than two questions with the exception of
NLS. My exam had three questions on NLS and I have
heard of exams with four. Be extra careful on this
exam, mark the questions you are unsure of, and study
hard and this exam will not be nearly as difficult
as I have made it out to sound.
Good
Luck!
