If
you already took the DBA exam and did well, then you should
do OK here. In fact, this exam is very much an extension
of the Database Administration exam. While the questions
on this exam are almost as vague as those found on the
DBA exam, many of the correct answers are simply common
sense. Once again if you know your stuff, then this exam
shouldn't give you too hard of a time.
The
primary focus of this exam is on the Recovery Manager
tool. RMAN is by far the star of this exam and you
can expect upwards of 20 questions to be about the
various facets of RMAN. Connecting, maintaining recovery
catalogs, script maintenance, backup sets, physical & logical
backups with RMAN, and complete & incomplete recovery
with RMAN are all represented in detail. Make certain
that you are fairly confident in the utilization of
this tool before sitting for this exam or you will
be taking it again.
If
RMAN is this exam's obsession then NOARCHIVELOG mode
is its compulsion. Many questions will showcase scenarios
where the DBA, out of a subconscious desire to become
a sheep farmer, has disabled ARCHIVELOG mode just before
a catastrophic media failure. Needless to say, it is
now your job to recover the database. Make sure you
know the consequences of running in NOARCHIVELOG mode
and what recovery options you have. Fortunately, these
are some of the easiest questions on the exam with
the possible exception of the two or three you will
get about backup and recovery considerations.
Complete
and incomplete recovery when Archiving is enabled will
make up the majority of the remaining questions. While
the complete recovery questions were more plentiful
(6), it was the questions on incomplete recovery that
were much more difficult. Make certain that you are
familiar with time based and cancel based recovery,
as you will most likely get three or four questions
on these types of incomplete recovery. In addition,
make sure you are familiar with the import/export,
various types of failures, troubleshooting, redo logs,
and re-creating control files.
Strong
knowledge in the above areas should enable you do very
well on this exam. The questions can be tricky, but
they are not difficult. Read up on your materials and
read the questions carefully and you should do fine.
Good
Luck!
